*tap* *tap* Izzis thing on? *blows cobwebs*

I've missed writing here, but I haven't felt like I had time, and then when I had time, I didn't have energy. And when I had energy, I was more concerned with the living of the life, than the recording.

But I feel like the me-of-years-from-now would prefer I come back to writing, at least occasionally. ...And if there are any other readers left out there, I'm very happy to have you here too.

I don't know if this happens to anybody else, but I still write journal posts in my head; I just never record them. Which feels silly. Especially since sometimes I come up with really awesome titles.

Awesome titles like "Hi!"?

I compose in my head too, but I wonder if that takes away from extra living I should be doing.

Yes! Exactly like "hi!" ;)

Somewhere there's a happy medium between just-doing and just-contemplation; and it's a changing balance.

Hello :-)
Jul. 28th, 2012 11:07 am (UTC)
I've always found posting here had a few purposes such as helping to keep my friends up to date with what's going on in my life. So I'm trying to get back into posting at least a few big events on here.

It's good to hear from you and hope those posts in your head are happy ones.
Jul. 28th, 2012 04:35 pm (UTC)
Thanks! Yes, many of them are happy posts in my head. The rants usually wind up in other forms, mostly in-person with Dan or others.

I appreciate reading your posts too. :)

My head has pretty much switched to writing Facebook statuses. I'm not sure how I feel about that!
Jul. 28th, 2012 04:31 pm (UTC)
I find fb and twitter so transient and chat-like, which really isn't what I'm after when I want to write.

That said, I do enjoy when I can check in on fb; and also Dan and I occasionally still tell each other Facebook status updates in the third person present tense... perhaps ironically, or nostalgically, the difference being difficult to tell some times these days.

I compose in my head often. It gets frustrating when I finally sit down in front of the keyboard and I KNOW what I want to say, but I'll be damned if I know HOW I want to say it. :P
Jul. 28th, 2012 04:21 pm (UTC)
Yes, exactly. I've done that a lot in the last months!
Jul. 28th, 2012 01:30 pm (UTC)
I wrote a post last night, decided it was too rambling to be of interest to anybody (besides largely going over old ground), and made it private. Dunno if I'll come back to it.

Most of the people and events in my life that would be good fodder for posts these days would involve heavy anonymizing, breaching confidence, or stating opinions it's impolitic for me to express in my current work position. This is true both at work and at home, where the coming week will be interesting for reasons I would chat with you about over coffee or tea.
Jul. 28th, 2012 04:20 pm (UTC)
Yes- high time for a coffee date.

Nothing wrong with private posts, I think. And perhaps some of the stories will age like a fine wine; or coalesce into a pattern worth sharing over time. That's what I'm hoping, at least.

Happens to me all the time. :)

A lot of what makes the grade for posting here is stuff that I might want to have recorded, like the saga of the New House, or the updates on my back.

Unfortunately, someone in an anonymous thread elsewhere complained about people "bragging" about their fancy restaurant meals, renovating their new home and their amazing trips to fabulous destinations, when that person is so poor they can't afford to go to the movies. While the stated goal of that comment was looking for ways to overcome their own resentment, it was hard not to see it as directed at me and I find that has somewhat dampened my own joy in chronicling my life here. Which is silly and I'm working to overcome that, but I notice it nevertheless.

In any case, I am always glad to see a post from you and to know what's up. How are you enjoying your new digs?
Jul. 28th, 2012 10:02 pm (UTC)
I'm sorry to hear about that anonymous thread elsewhere; that is unfortunate. Some of my impediment to posting has felt a bit similar, though it wasn't precipitated by any particular comment. As a guy who has to work on sometimes not elevating the feelings of others over my own, I do need to keep reminding myself that in the end it's *my* journal; and I am just as entitled to have a voice of my own as they are.

Which isn't to say I don't want friends to call me on if I say something that's bullshit or insensitive; I definitely want to hear from y'all if I did. Thanks. :)

I feel like I'm writing from a position of fairly great privilege, and along with acknowledging that, I hope to keep talking about my gratitude for being in this position. Which sort of swings into some of the writing I hope to do that may require making a space for being comfortable about using God-language... Still not figured out where that is, whether it's here or elsewhere.
Jul. 29th, 2012 03:31 am (UTC)
Absolutely. I think that I come back, again and again, to how lucky I feel to be able to make the choices and have the opportunities that we do, and how very grateful I am for the undeservedly wonderful life I seem to be having. And part of me wants to be a shining example that it is possible to live happily ever after, in a mindful way.

I would be interested in reading what you have to say about God. It's not language I'm comfortable with from myself (well, not if I'm speaking sincerely) but I always find it interesting when, for example, people in my church use it, as some do.
Jul. 29th, 2012 11:58 pm (UTC)
Yes- certainly. I will definitely make all sorts of announcements if I add a blog to talk about spiritual/Quaker stuff.

Jul. 28th, 2012 10:05 pm (UTC)
Oh- and the new digs- they are great! I am enjoying the view from my study, looking out over the roof of a church; and I hope to post about the new place this weekend!

I'm also enjoying reading about your house-in-progress, and glad to hear that the end is perhaps in sight!
Jul. 29th, 2012 03:33 am (UTC)
Yay for the view!

And yes, we're getting very eager to stop the planning, get through the moving, and start in on just living there. I hope that y'all will have a trip to Boston before long and be able to come see for yourselves. We're definitely thinking of a trip to your area, but other trips keep intervening--I suspect you know how that is :)
Jul. 30th, 2012 12:03 am (UTC)
I look forward to that, too. And yes, we know how that is. :)

Just a few minutes ago, as I was admiring the sunset on the church, a pair of hot air balloons rose from the park just around the corner and arced across my field of view.

I had somehow forgotten they were a feature of this park on most weekend evenings, every year.

I guess they're later starting this year, and I also guess sooner or later I'll look out the window and say "eh, it's yet another hot air balloon overhead"

But for now- hey cool! Hot air balloons right overhead!
Jul. 30th, 2012 12:33 am (UTC)
That would make me very happy! What an added bonus.
Jul. 29th, 2012 03:13 am (UTC)

It's nice to see that you have singlehandedly revived Livejournal. I
should have bought stock.
Jul. 30th, 2012 12:04 am (UTC)
...I might be in cahoots with the Russians, after all.

Hi to you, too. :)
Jul. 29th, 2012 03:53 am (UTC)
Welcome back to the fold! I often fail to post because it takes me days to figure out what I want to say, and once it is composed in my brain it feels like personal closure has been accomplished. (plus, well, I kind of forget that I haven't actually posted it. few people have direct access to my brain)

The biggest challenge for me is coming up with an appropriate song for a post. Happily there are quite a few songs out there to choose from...
